The Institute of New Materials and Energy Technologies
About INMET
The Institute of New Materials and Energy Technologies (INMET) is a private research institution at Nazarbayev University dedicated to advancing energy technologies, advanced materials, and sustainable innovation.

The Institute was established in 2025 on the basis of the Center for Energy and Advanced Materials Science of the National Laboratory Astana, Nazarbayev University, with the support of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Mission
To advance cutting-edge research in energy technologies and advanced materials by fostering innovation, education, and strong national and international collaboration in support of sustainable development.

INMET Key projects
Description of key projects implemented by INMET laboratories. Goals and results of the projects that contribute to the advancement of science.
This project identifies the micropollutant concentrations at different stages of Astana urban water system, studies their effect on human health and ecology, and assesses the micropollutant removal efficiency of available water/wastewater and waste (sludge) disposal technologies.
More
This project explores how natural nemalite–serpentinite and technogenic serpentinite rocks can be used as low-cost, mineral-based materials for capturing, absorbing, and permanently storing carbon dioxide.
More
Central to this research is an patented sulfation roasting–water leaching process, which enables efficient transfer of nickel and cobalt into solution while suppressing excessive iron dissolution. Optimization of this patented roasting–leaching route resulted in high leaching efficiencies for nickel and cobalt (˃90%) and the formation of a pregnant leach solution (PLS) suitable for downstream purification and metal recovery.

New biotechnologies for medicine and agriculture
Kazakhstani scientists have, for the first time in the world, developed a technology for producing life-saving pharmaceutical drugs from rice husk residues and corn cobs, combining the principles of green chemistry with pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Battery for electric car
Battery group developed, optimized, scaled up, and integrated LiFePO4 (LFP)-graphite pouch cells produced on a semi-automatic pilot line. Processes ranging from electrode formulation to pouch cell fabrication, electrolyte optimization, module assembly, and system integration were systematically developed. Battery block prototype has been tested in electric car JAC e-JS4 (JAC Motors Qazaqstan, Almaty)
